Carbamathione, S-(N, N-diethylcarbamoyl) Glutathioneas, as a Novel Agent for the Treatment of Stroke

Description:

A cerebral ischemia, or stroke as it is more commonly known, is a condition where there is insufficient blood flow to the brain to meet proper metabolic functions. Thus, this condition deprives brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients, which causes cells in the brain to die within minutes. This technology is a novel treatment for stroke, which has neuroprotective properties that can benefit stroke patients. Carbamathione is a metabolite of Disulfiram and functions as a glutamate antagonist. This compound affects brain function and, consequently, has a neuroprotective function under specific conditions such as hypoxia-induced or ischemia-induced brain injury. Initial research has shown the protective effect of carbmathione in a PC12 cell model (cellular neuronal model) against hypoxia-induced cell injury. Additionally, the in vivo effect of carbamathione has been demonstrated in a stroke mice model.
