Water and Moisture Activated Material for Rapid Deployable Underwater Sensor Framework and Undersea Robotic Applications


This innovation utilizes water-activated polyurethane foam to create rigid and flexible structures that can be used in marine applications. Expansion time, expansion volume, structural homogeneity, structural compression and expansion, and bending strength have been measured to determine the basic structural composition of the formed foam structure.  Foams can range from rigid to flexible structures with varying levels of density and rigidity. These foams are applicable in robotic manipulators, counter-balance buoyancy of a sea platform, emergency release applications, and deployable sensor mounts.
